The Story of My Photographic Journey

I am a retired special education teacher who retired early because of my mom coming down with dementia in 2003. It was a sad decision because of my love for teaching but also I needed to be there on this journey to help my mom getting the care she needed.

It began a very  rough road for our family seeing our Mom like she was becoming.  I began to start showing a lot of stress, and anxiety, so my husband, Tom and I started walking in our woods. On our walks I saw many adorable animals, and started sketching them. I have an art, degree so it was fun trying different medias with my drawings. While on our walks I was amazed by the beauty God had given us all through his flowers, birds, trees and anything else he showed through nature.

My husband saw how much I was so tuned into the animals, so he bought be a camera. I had no idea about cameras but had fun trying many things with my Nikon. I was so happy with my new toy, and started taking photos of my mom moving through her journey with dementia. I put my stories and photos in a blog showing the happy times and even the sad times. My blog helped many other families dealing with their loved ones knowing what to expect and how to help make this journey a loving one and a learning experience too.

I put my photos from our nature walks in a photo book and shared them with my mom. My mom did not know who I was but she would hold the photography book and point to the photos with smiles and even a lot of giggles. At the memory area where she was, other residents that had dementia would come and want to see the photos. So several days a week I would put my photos on the television and told stories about my photos.

It seems such a long time since 2003.  But, working with my photos and my chronicling my mom’s journey with dementia, has made the time richer. Now I have photos all over her room where she stares at them and sometimes she will react with a big smile, and a few tears. She remembers the photos but not me and that’s okay. Many of the old residents are still around and new ones have come, but all of them are still enjoying my photos either from the photograph books, on the television or in frames. Some will tell their own stories about what they see, and some will just smile. I have had many family members ask if I could make  some notecards of some of their loved ones favorite photos. My notecards have been such a success now.

My mom is on Hospice now and does not have long to live, but the memories that I have made through my photos will last forever. I have even helped other family members throughout these years by taking photos of their loved ones. I still get emails thanking me for the fun photos that they hold dear to their hearts. I even get calls to make small photo books of my zoo animals, for kids that are sick in the hospital. Many of the children loved to write stories about my photos regarding what the animals are thinking or doing. My photos even helped sick kids to feel better.

My camera is with me all the time, and I am always taking photos. I am so blessed to have gotten on this journey.

My Photos at the Art Gallery

Tracey, the owner of Art in Bloom Gallery and Floral Shop in Brighton, has many of my photos on  display and for sale.  Tracey's store is so amazing, you will not believe all the beautiful artwork and flowers she has on display.  She says the photo's that I have on sale there fit in perfectly with her store.  Next time you are in Brighton, you have to stop in and say hi to Tracey and her mom Bee and see the wonderful items and flowers in Tracey's store.

Here are a sampling of my photos on display in Tracey's Store.  The posting after this will have close-ups of all my photos.

Summer Bloom Notecards

These notecards represent a collection of the beautiful flowers that are blooming now for the summer.  Most of the flowers were photographed near by in neighbor's gardens, some around our house, and at the nursery.  The Field of Daisies was taken growing wild along McClumpha Rd.  The Peonies were photographed at Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor.  While the quilts and flags are not summer flowers, I thought they would make nice notecards, so I included them with this set.

These Notecards, along with my complete collection, are available at: Etsy

Bursting into Spring in Early March and April

With all the beautiful Spring weather we are having in March and April, I couldn't resist to start taking pictures of all the spring flowers that are blooming everywhere you look.  I grouped them together in different ways to create the notecards that are shown below.  These notecards make a perfect addition to welcoming in Spring and Easter time, both are just around the corner...

All the above groupings of note cards can be purchased at: Etsy
